Food is big part of travel and I always sign up for a cooking class in every country I travel visit. If the country has lots of variations in their food, I even sign up for classes in different parts of the country. If you haven’t been doing this (or if you’re not a huge fan cooking), here’s 8 reasons why you should sign up for a cooking class on your next trip.
- Food can teach you about the country’s history.
There’s a reason why certain ingredients are used in a country’s cooking. There’s a lost a reason why and how new ingredients or flavours have been introduced. When I’ve taken cooking classes in foreign countries, I’ve always heard about a bit of the history. For example, how the French brought their bread baking styles to Vietnam or how certain spices were introduced in Southeast Asia because of countries invading other countries.
- It’s a great souvenir.
You can learn how to make the dish authentically so that you can bring those flavours home with you. It’s the travel souvenir that keeps on giving because you can enjoy it for years to come. And bonus! Recipes take absolutely zero room in your suitcase (especially if you take a photo of the recipe or type it up on your phone).
- Meet other travellers and swap stories.
I’m a solo traveller and find it easy to meet other solo travellers at cooking classes. I always meet interesting people that sometimes become travel buddies for a couple of days. It’s a chance to exchange travel stories, share experiences, and learn new tips.
- It’s a great way to meet a local and ask all your questions.
The chef is probably a native of the area, knows it really well, and can likely communicate in your language. They’re bound to have lots of information that they can share, food-related or not, and all you have to do is ask! They can tell you about the region, give you recommendations for restaurants and what hidden gems you should check out.
- You don’t have to spend money on lunch or dinner.
You’ll make so many different dishes that you’ll be stuffed! There is no way you’ll be hungry and so you won’t have to spend extra money on another meal that day. Since you get to try so many different dishes, you won’t end up ordering something on a menu that you don’t like.
- You’ll have lots of fun.
Cooking classes are always fun and relaxed. Sometimes they are even set in beautiful locations. There’s no pressure here. So, even if you only know how to heat up leftovers in the microwave, you’ll still have a great time in a cooking class.
- There’s no clean up!
I love cooking…especially when everything is pre-cut and pre-measured. I like it even more when I don’t have to do the clean up!
- You’ll improve your cooking skills.
At the end of the day, this why you take a cooking class. Learn new skills or upgrade your skills and become a master chef of a specific dish.
